Caesar and Cleopatra

Cleopatra, knowing that with the help of Caesar she may be able to rule Egypt in her own right, made it her mission to seduce Caesar.Vivacious, Cleopatra, in hopes of getting close to Caesar smuggled herself into Caesar’s house rolled into a carpet that was set to be delivered to his home. With this trick, Caesar became captivated with Cleopatra. Caesar instantly became charmed by her cleverness, audacity, and bravery to carry out such a plan. Plutarch says, "It was by this device of Cleopatra's, it is said, that Caesar was first captivated, for she showed herself to be a bold coquette” . Soon after, Cleopatra and Caesar began their affair. Cleopatra was 21 and Caesar was 52. To support Cleopatra, Caesar took part in a four month war with Ptolemy XIV in which, Caesar drove Ptolemy XII out of Egypt. It is believed that Ptolemy XIII drowned in the Nile. Caesar then returned the throne to Cleopatra Around 47 B.C. Cleopatra gave birth to Caesar’s son, Ptolemy Caesar, also known as Caesarion meaning “little caesar” in Egyptian. Some say that that Caesar only stayed with Cleopatra because of her high position in Egypt and hoped to gain something from her after she was returned to the throne. The fact that they had a child together shows either that they were totally in love and committed to enhancing their relationship, or they were looking create a permanent alliance between the two nations. It may have possibly even been an accident. Sometime in 46-45 B.C., Cleopatra traveled with Ptolemy XIV and Caesarion to Rome to visit Caesar. She stayed till his assassination in March 44 B.C
